The Conservation Fund's Resourceful Communities Program
What type of work does your organization do?
Established in 1991, The Conservation Fund's Resourceful Communities Program blends innovative techniques to help North Carolina's underserved communities create new economies that protect and restore, rather than extract, natural resources.
Resourceful Communities provides a range of direct assistance to develop the leadership and organizational capacity necessary for sustainable community development. Because Resourceful Communities works closely with local partners, including nonprofit, private and public concerns, we help ensure local ownership of long-term economic, social and environmental change.
Resourceful Communities helps partners access resources and learn techniques to advance nontraditional, asset-based approaches to age-old problems such as environmental degradation, poverty and racism.
Every community is unique, and Resourceful Communities' efforts reflect this. We meet communities where they are.
What area of the country do you work in?
Mostly rural North Carolina, but also more broadly throughout the Southeastern US
Who do you work with?
Our diverse partners and communities drive the mission of Resourceful Communities. We collaborate with a statewide nwtrok of 165+ rural grassroots organizations (our partners) on strategies that are dynamic and responsive to the particular assets, needs and priorities of each community.
We help partners access resources and learn techniques to advance non-traditional, asset-based approaches to age-old problems such as poverty, racism and resource loss.
Resourceful Communities builds relationships and follows the lead and wisdom of local leaders in crafting strategies to build on assets, address deficits and strengthen communities. Through our peer learning network, partner organizations mentor and model for one another to foster sustainable collaborations that net meaningful results. This network is comprised of community leaders, nonprofits, municipalities and state agencies.
What is the main obstacle your organization encounters that prevents you from doing your work most effectively?
The ages-old social and economic stresses / dynamics that have kept rural communities from progressing, organizing and implementing the sensible approaches to sustainable development that rural residents prefer to do if only they are given the space.
