SRDI works in many ways to transform communities across the rural South. Through SRDI's place-based initiatives, diverse coalitions are working across race, age, class, sector and strategy lines in rural communities to envision an optimistic future, implement sustainable development strategies, and advocate for essential public and private resources. These initiatives include; community-based philanthropy, aligning public funds, organizational capacity and economic alternatives. Please visit www.srdi.org for more information.
What area of the country do you work in?
Predominately in the Southeast
Who do you work with?
SRDI works with many differnet types of communities and organizations. SRDI works in rural communities to increase income, assets, and racial equity in regions of the rural South with persistent poverty. Specifically, we focus on strengthening asset-based economic development efforts that respect, honor, and preserve local culture, heritage and the natural environment while simultaneously working to resolve the crippling legacy of racism and other oppressions in the rural South.
What is the main obstacle your organization encounters that prevents you from doing your work most effectively?
Breaking through the engrained traditions of racism and oppression that perpetually and stubbornly linger today. These hurtful traditions often prevent an inclusiveness which in turn prohibits ALL local knowledge from coming to the table which is absolutely vital in transforming a community.
