What area of the country do you work in?
California
Who do you work with?
WE have completed 5 USDA RUS distance learning and telemedicine grants serving 150 rural communities in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. We have also worked through National Science Foundation funding on the development of health and education Networks in the U.S., Costa Rica, Belize and Honduras. We are currently working on a California Endownment for the Humanities grant project producing a video story of small, family owned farms, exploring the economics, farming techniques and history of multi-generation farms. We currently provide telemedicine Networking resources for 45 small health clinics.
What is the main obstacle your organization encounters that prevents you from doing your work most effectively?
In the field of telemedicine one of the most common challenges is bringing various stakeholders together to create unified Networks between County Health Care systems and small rural health clinics.
In the Distance Learning field one of the greatest challenges has been the need for greater State and Federal commitment through funding for teacher technology skills training and for the introduction of curriculum support resources for students.
In our Rural Development work two significant challenges have presented themselves over the past 15 years. First is the need, generally at the County level, to update zoning and farm regulations to encourage multi-generation owned small farms to continue. The most significant problem has been the need for greater Federal funding to support new farming efforts and help bring in new technology and energy resources for existing small farms.
